Join us for a high-flying night at the SFO Museum and learn about the path to aviation decarbonization!

The key lever to reduce aviation’s climate impact is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF is expected to contribute 70% of the industry’s carbon dioxide emissions reduction through 2050. Flights out of SFO refuel with among the highest SAF volumes globally due to California’s industry-leading Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) and SFO's dedicated advocacy, which collectively bring SAF closer to price parity with traditional jet A fuel.

Join us for an exciting dialogue on how to reduce aviation’s climate impact at the historic SFO International Terminal Museum over catered appetizers and drinks. This fireside chat brings together critical perspectives from distinguished panelists across investment, SAF production, airline operations, and airport sustainability. They will discuss the role of SAF, clean energy technologies, and non-CO2 reduction measures to address the sector’s growing climate impact.

Moderator: Erin Cooke, Director of Sustainability + Resilience @ SFO

Panelists:

  • Ashwin Jadhav, Vice President, Business Development @ Twelve

Bioenergy Recovery Facility Site Visit at EBMUD

Bioenergy Recovery Facility Site Visit at EBMUD

Join us for an in person tour of the EBMUD's Bioenergy Recovery Site and networking happy hour at Temescal Brewing to follow!

YPE is pleased to partner with EBMUD to host this site visit tour of renewable energy infrastructure right here in the Bay Area! This will be the first of a series of site visits YPE will offer in 2024, look for similar events in the near future!

The East Bay Municipal Utility District is a California public utility that supplies high-quality drinking water, generates renewable energy, and provides pollution prevention and wastewater treatment services that protect San Francisco Bay. EBMUD has been producing renewable energy since the 1980s; in 2011 it became the first wastewater treatment plant in North America to produce more energy onsite than is needed to run the facility. EBMUD collects 20-40 tons of food scraps daily from restaurants, supermarkets and other municipal entities and utilizes anaerobic digestion to create biogas that powers its on-site low emission gas turbine to power its facility, selling any excess energy back to the grid.

The EBMUD in-person tour will be led by an EBMUD employee and typically lasts 1.5 hours. Please note - all attendees will be required to fill out a waiver in order to participate in the tour. Please fill out the waiver and fill out this survey so we can collect copies in advance. Alternatively, you can also print and bring your waiver with you to your tour. Additionally, EBMUD cautions - "This tour involves walking up and down narrow stairways, walking over uneven ground, and potentially being exposed to strong odors and birds." Closed toed shoes are required and parking is limited, so please carpool if at all possible

Directions to the facility can be found here or refer to the description below: "When you turn onto Wake Avenue, follow the road as it curves to the right. The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is approximately 1/4 mile, at the end of Wake. The security guard will provide parking directions. Look for signs that will direct you to the building entrance and to the reception.

Happy Hour and Networking will follow around 5:30 PM at Temescal Brewing - 4115 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA 94609. YPE to provide an initial round of drinks for those who can attend!

This event is free, but please register for planning purposes. BYO favorite drinks and snacks!

We will have three rounds of discussion, the first beginning at 1:30pm. At the beginning of each round, 3 energy discussion prompts will be read out loud. Participants will select the prompt that is most interesting to them to discuss. We will break out into 3 small groups and discuss the prompt for 20 minutes. We will then take a small break and switch to the next round .

After the three rounds of discussions are over, stick around to socialize with other attendees!

Curious what we'll discuss? Here are some example prompts:

  • Should the US increase its use of nuclear?

  • Should we invest in green hydrogen? If yes, in what sectors?

  • Who do you think is in a better position to move climate policy forward? State or federal government?

  • Should natural gas be used as a transition fuel to achieve net zero carbon?

  • Which is more beneficial to clean energy investment - venture capital vs government funding?

  • Should the US pay developing countries to help them avoid carbon emissions? If yes, how do you decide how much money and how should we pay them?

  • Do you think autonomous electric vehicles present more positives or negatives to the workforce, transit access, safety, and the environment?

  • Should individuals cut down on flight travel in order to reduce their carbon footprint?

  • Should the federal government actively build new clean infrastructure or should we incentivize markets to move in that direction?

YPE Family Picnic!

After a winter of historic rainfall, we’re ready to get outside and celebrate the earth! Join Young Professionals in Energy (YPE) SF Bay Area for a family-friendly cookout and field day! Here at YPE, we get a lot of questions about what we define as “young”. We generally share that our programming is designed to target earlier in their career professionals and that all ages are welcome. For this event, we decided something special for our youngest members (the kiddos) was overdue! Bring your kids, pets, and loved ones to enjoy the fresh air and meet new energy professionals. This fun-filled, family friendly picnic will be held at the lovely Big Leaf Picnic Area in Tilden Regional Park on April 29th from 11:30AM-2PM. We'll be barbequing burgers (veggie and vegan-friendly options available), with drinks and sides. There will be plenty of space for games like cornhole, frisbee, spikeball, and more! The picnic area is also next to a playground, Tilden Little Farm, and we'll have a gated play pen on a blanket. Tickets are $20 per adult and cover food, drinks, and games (feel free to bring your favorite lawn game to share)! Kids and pets fly free!

Meeting the Moment: What the Inflation Reduction Act Means for Energy Justice

Please join us for a conversation about the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and energy justice with Dr. Tony Reames, Deputy Director for Energy Justice at the US Department of Energy (DOE), hosted by YPE SF Bay Area and moderated by Dr. Daniel Kammen, Co-Director of the Roundtable on Climate and Environmental Justice at the University of California, Berkeley. The IRA is an unprecedented piece of climate legislation, and it also creates pathways for the federal government to make significant investments in disadvantaged communities that are disproportionately impacted by both energy poverty and climate change. Come learn how the DOE is working to make the most of this historic moment, and what role you or your organization can play in a just transition to clean energy.
